Week 5

Whagwan everyone?! if emails could have feelings then this one would be crying a lot. it rained freakin hard on our way to the internet cafe so i am completely soaked right now! Jamaican weather is absolutely crazy! all the missionaries are super stoked for conference to be this week! we've been looking forward to this for a while. me and elder dalley are gonna try to use a lot of talks for the next 2 weeks with our investigators. Following the Prophet is gonna be the main lesson we teach so that it leads into them coming to Conference. i think that this is gonna be the first time ever that i will see all 5 sessions. ive always been asleep for the morning ones so it will be really cool to see them all for the first time! its also weird to think that the first transfer is almost over. ill still be here in port antonio with elder dalley for the next transfer but the time really has flown by! i want 2 years to seem like that but at the same time i really dont cause i love it down here!

Day 41 monday
Pday defiantly helped out a lot. after not feeling the spirit on sunday i had it back for today. Good news and bad news. Good News: i finally got to play basketball!!! ive been waiting so long for this! Elder Gordon (native missionary) and i went to the other side of town and played. Bad news: i found out that my MTC name, Elder Baller, is gone. i sucked it up so bad. it was like i was playing church ball again haha. it has been a month since ive played but it was still super bad. hopefully over the next few weeks ill have that back. We'll be going in the mornings so waking up at 5aminstead of 6:30 is gonna be interesting. I also got a very good quote in my emails that really helped out my day. "Dont Give Up, Dont Ever Give Up" - Jimmy V. probably my favorite quote of all time. its simple, blunt, and very loving.

Day 42 tuesday
We got quite a bit of new investigators today! we had a goal to get 4 new ones and we got 4! they werent the 4 that we were planning on but who cares about that! 4 people are interested in the gospel! the family is still really screwed up down here. people just get married in their hearts cause some of them are Rasta, and its against their religion i guess. law of Chastity is the "make or break" lesson i guess. we taught a couple who has been together for 8 years but is not married. the guy didnt keep the commitment to read the restoration pamphlet but the girl did. she read it like 4 times. she even did the questions. she felt bad that she couldnt finsh them tho. she didnt have a book of mormon haha. she softly rebuked the guy too for not reading. at the beginning of the lesson we asked her if she would be at church and she wasnt all too sure about it. but by the end of the lesson she was saying that she would for sure be there! SO SICK! we also met a guy named Roshane. he said that he has made some mistakes in his life that he regrets and he just wants to turn his life over to God. he saw the other missionaries one day and talked to them. he lives in our area so they gave us the info. he is a SUPER chill guy! he even brought his brother who didnt seem to interested at first but was very interested by the end.

Day 43 Wednesday
District meeting was not a disaster this time. Ocho Rios just came here on the taxi so it worked out well. we watched the driving and bicycle safety videos. THEY ARE SUPER CHEESY!! its more of a comedy thing than anything else! but after that we did another trade off. Elder Dalley went to Ocho Rios with elder beck so i stayed in Port Antonio with Elder martin. it was kinda scary cause it was my first time having to really take charge in all of the lessons. Kadeen, the baptism we had on the 14th, came teaching with us all day too so she can get ready for a mission in a year. the day was super good. we had some crazy spiritual lessons and the people really seemed receptive to them. it was an amazing confidence boost for me.

day 44 Thursday
today was super slow. me and elder martin had to go to Ochi to get Elder Dalley so most of our morning was spent doing that. the fare to get there isnt cheap either. its like $600 to get there and $600 to get back by just taxi. if we took the 6am bus then we coulda saved a bill or so but we needed a longer trade off. elder dalley had to cover for me on the way back cause i ran out of cash so i will owe him on monday. we didnt have a lot of lessons cause we didnt get back until like 5pm. we had our dinner appointment and then a lesson next door to that. just to say, Driving in Jamaica really sucks. "come what may and [deal with] it" i guess haha

day 45 friday
During the middle of our weekly planning President Brown stopped by. he came and gave us some super sick advice. basically what he said was that we needed to have less lessons and more baptisms. we need to be sure that the lessons we do have are perfect and we get fellowshipping involved big time. we need to spend more time getting someone to come with us and prepping them by telling them how they will help that person and what parts they will have in the lesson. it really hit hard cause we have been struggling with that. we are really gonna rethink what we're doing and apply that stuff. We tried it that night with a home teaching thing. no one in the branch does their home teaching so its lead to a lot of inactive members i bet. we prepped someone on what was going to happen and then went over to the less actives house. i dont know why we had to be there cause he taught the whole lesson by himself! it was so awesome!

Day 46 Saturday
Days are really starting to get super short. there is almost no time in the day or night for me to do things that i need to do, like laundry or writing in my journal. its quite depressing to be honest. scheduling is very hard too. i guess that anytime after 7pm in jamaica is considered late so our dinner is at 8pm. and then most of the investigators we have live like an hour bike ride away. we cover the eastern side of the Portland parish (state) so its hard to get out there. ive yet to be past Blue Bay but the travel time is nuts. we try to get several appointments out there but its still way crazy. we decided that we are going to switch off every day where we go. one day we will be in prospect and anchovy near the church. and the other day we will go out to Drapers and san san to teach the people out there. hopefully that will all work out. we have been finding a lot of people out there so it should work wonders. it probably wont be long until we just start going out there everyday

day 47 sunday
so for some reason ive been having really weird dreams lately. the past few nights i have been having dreams about some of the girls back home. ya its kinda creepin me out too. everyone in my house says that im gonna have a "Black Dream" tho. i guess that is where you dream that everyone back home is black. im not sure which one is creepier. hopefully the dreams will stop or make sense after a while. we really only had one lesson today. Stephanie, she lives next to our thursday dinnerappointment, finally came to church so we had a lesson with her right after. we taught her the Word of Wisdom. it doesnt look like she has any problems with it. just her baby-husband. its still been raining a lot! i wish i knew where that Tropical Storm/Hurricane was!!! Jamaican rain is just crazy! it can be 100% sunny but rain like crap at the same time!
Everyone - dont forget to Email any questions you have! i love to answer them! my email iskurtley.meacham@myldsmail.net

Well thats all that i got for this week. Hopefully more will happen for this next week haha

Week 4 Jamaica

What is up America?! Jamaica is really hot, i sweat all the time, it rains freaking hard and then drys off, dryers do not exist here, and i love every single moment of it! The land is super pretty and i cant believe that ive already been out on my mission for an entire month!

Day 34 Monday
i was caught in my first rain storm. i guess its gonna rain a lot the next little bit cause there is a topical Storm off the island somewhere. kinda weird cause the last one that hit was Tropical Storm Sandy. i guess it tore the town to shreds but from what ive heard this is no where near what Sandy was. its hard to teach any one when it rains cause most jamaicans are scared of rain or something. i did finally get some more music haha. disney music i guess isnt the best to have right now so i got more lds music at the church here. so far its pretty good. shopping this week was really pricey. i spent like $3000 on the stuff. for those of you who dont remember, thats like $30 US. the only good thing about that is i know that its going to last me for the rest of the week

Day 35 Tuesday
It was super wet today! it started to rain during one of our lessons. we were outside so i was getting hit pretty good. we woulda gone inside but there were 2 problems. there wasnt a man 18 or older, and it was so hot that the rain felt really good! The investigator we baptised has got a big desire to serve a mission so we are starting to teach her all of the new member lessons as well as having a mission prep type lesson. our 9 year old investigator i feel super bad for. he still really wants to be baptised but his dad said no to it so we are not allowed to baptise him. we are gonna try to talk to him about it but its hard cause every time that we go there he is drunk. another one of our investigators has decided to push back her day cause she doesnt wanna kick out the guy thats there. he is paying some of the bills so its really hard for her. she still really wants to be baptised tho so thats good.

Day 36 Wednesday
Jamaican weather is a lot like Utah weather. it makes no sense! its so hot and that tropical storm is still somewhere around here. district meeting was a complete disaster today. we still had a good lesson but we tried to skype it cause it costs a lot to go from Ocho Rios to Port Antonio for the Elders that are out there. it took us like an hour to get everything figured out. by the time it was all good we just had a short lesson. after that was really slow tho. we rode out to San San to teach an investigator only to find out that he wasnt there. the good news with that, we finally contacted Norene! Norene is a lady that we met in the Miami Airport on our way over here. we all wanted to come to Porty so that we could teach her. i was called here of course but it took a bit to contact her because of all the scheduling conflicts we had.

Day 37 Thursdasy
like i said. i hate jamaican weather. i swear its like 100 degrees here! i have very few, if any, appointments that i dont show up to dripping in sweat! it was a productive day tho. we are struggling to find people but we made goals to change that. we had a lot more lessons today than we have the last few. some of the less actives, in fact its like most of them, dont come to church cause they got offended in some way. its so stupid! we need to find a way to get them to come back. lots of praying the next few days haha

Day 38 Friday
Today was super awesome! we found a family that has been less active for like 4 or 5 years. he still has a lot of faith but the trick is to get him to church. after that was the sickest thing ever! we still had to find a river for one of our investigators and we had heard that there was one kinda near there. so we went on a little adventure haha. we ended up following two kids on accident. we crossed a river and started going up a hill, which the house up there was where the kids lived i guess. we decided to turn back cause we werent getting anywhere and it probably looked really creepy that we were almost followiing them. two white guys in white shirts and ties following two black kids looks too much like the CIA i guess haha. we started going back when the mom of the two kids started calling to us "WAIT WAIT WAIT!" we got talking to her and it turns out that she had been wanting to talk to us for quite some time. a long time ago she was talking to a Rasta (non christian religion in jamaica. i think its where the HIGH stereotype come from) and she mentioned that the Mormon church was the only other church she liked. Janet, the lady who came out to us, wondered what that was. the Rasta gave her a Book of Mormon of all things! she just put it on the shelf and it had been sitting there for ages. Janet was baptised into the Seventh-Day church about 3 months ago and she said that something was off about it. she remembered that she had the BOM. she started reading it! apparently she has gotten to Moroni 8 a bunch of times but starts over when she gets there for some reason. she has not gone to the 7th day church since. they have been coming by telling her that she needs to come and she just tells them "no. i wanna see the mormons." she told us that she has been seeing us the last few weeks but has not had the courage to stop us. when her kids came to her when me and elder dalley showed up and said "MOM, THE MORMONS ARE HERE!" she jumped up and ran to us. She is super prepared! we are really wanting to teach them and so we set up 2 appointments with them! she also said that the only reason why she hadnt been coming to our church is cause she didnt know where it was or what time that it started. D&C 123:12 IS SO TRUE!!!!!!!!!

Day 39 Saturday
Finding has gone super well now. we've mostly just expanded cause more prepared people are living farther away from Port Anonio. some how, something about 2 of our investigators makes my bike and elder dalleys bike break down a bunch! both of our bikes broke down before we went there! mine broke down so bad that elder dalley got clear to there house before he realized that i wasnt there. the 10 year old that we teach tho has got a great mechanical mind and i broke down right by his house so i went there and had him help me. YES A 10 YEAR OLD HAD TO FIX MY BIKE AND I AM NOT ASHAMED HAHA! one main focus we are starting to have is less active members. the branch here isnt running the way it should so we are trying to get more Melkedzidek Preisthood holders to come. it is a main point to us to go see a Less Active each day.

Day 40 Sunday
i dont know why but today just really sucked. i think that it was by far the worst day that i have had as a missionary. for some reason after church i just could not feel the Spirit at all. i felt really bad cause we still had to go out and teach. it got better as the day went on. i think that it was back when we went and saw Janet at the end of the day. but thank heavens for P-Day. it feels nice to have a little break and email home. i asked for a blessing so i will see what happens with that the next few days.

Thats all for this week so i will "see" everyone next week

Week 4

Hey everyone! sorry this one might be short. i tried to send it before and it didnt so now im rushed on it

Day 27 monday
pday was sick! we started it out by burning a cockroach with bug spray and a lighter. that should be in my letter from last week. emails were way good too! the handbook says that most missionaries get distracted but i find that it doesnt do that to me! it gives me a new focus and makes my worries about home go away! i havent played basketball yet. i just found the hoops today and i need to buy a ball. not sure if its worth it yet. i might just play frisbee when i get a shot but we will see

day 28 tuesday
we did service for the first time since ive been here. all that work that i did for grandpa really paid off. it wasnt as hard of work but still really hard haha. i was sweating so much with the humidity. it rained really hard after tho! hardest storm ive seen yet! we took cover under the church and talked to people who had done the same thing. then we rode 5 miles to San San in a taxi to teach someone. he is so elect! the only thing that he really needs to do is get to church!

day 29 wednesday
we had zone meeting in ocho rios today. ochi is way nice! its a big tourist spot so there were people everywhere! which i liked haha. the meeting was way good too! we did a tradeoff so i spent the night in ochi. the people there are really nice and ready! the church is just starting to grow there so it was nice to see an almost fresh start. another cool thing, they have Dew! i was so glad that i got some! it really made me feel refreshed haha.

day 30 thursday
the last bit in ochi was odd. the bike that i was using got a flat on our way to service so we had to skip the service and walk clear back to town to get it fixed. after that we had nothing cause we had to get back to Portie soon. we went to the market next to the church and i got 2 jerseys. i will be sending one to keaden as soon as i can find a post office haha. the ride back was way long! it took us like 3 hours! how many people fit on a bus here? always one more! so crowded and no air!

day 31 friday
friday the 13th was odd. we planned a service for our investigator being baptized tomorrow so that was nice. our 10 year old investigator told us that he didnt want to be baptized. his friends were a big distraction too so when we teach him next it will be just him and on the importance of being baptized. then the chain on my bike got all tangled up! i was so ticked!  we were about to teach someone else and had to reschedule. it took us like 20 min! then someone came to help and did it in 10. this is why i hate bikes. i know nothing about them.

day 32 saturday
slow days are productive days for us here. our investigator was baptized today. it took a few tries to have it valid cause a part of her body kept sticking out. after lunch we taught 2 people who weve been teaching for about 1.5 weeks. we taught them the law of chastity. we didnt want to cause we can tell that nothing is going on and that they consider themselves a family. we will call president brown about the situation tho.

day 33 sunday
there havent been any arguments for 2 weeks haha! church is so good here! i never know what people are saying but the spirit is really strong. its kinda odd tho when the members just say what is on their mind even if it has nothing to do with whats being taught. most of them are crazy i guess. we called president brown about the situation with our investigators. they are fine cause of a 20 year age difference and she is just taking care of him. but there is a member there that will have to either move out or marry the woman. its up to her on what happens cause its her house so hopefully everything works out well

Week 2

Whagwan!? thats patois for whats going on. Jamaica is awesome! i love it more and more everyday! Cool thing that happened today since it wont be mentioned till next week if not now, we found a cockroach in our bathroom and burned it. we stepped on it and had it staying still and then one of the elders got the bug spray that i bought and a lighter. it was the coolest thing ever to see the bug spray light up and everything just hit the roach! i really wanna find another one just so that we can do that again!

Day 20 Monday

my first p day was awesome and not at the same time. doing emails was awesome and it helped me so much! the rest of the day was us trying to get all of our bikes fixed. i think we spent the rest of our pday waiting for them to be fixed. thank heavens we have a repair guy for that but our bikes really suck. i spent like $1000 jamaican ($10 US) just to fix it! it may not seem like a lot but when you only get $200 US a month its a freaking crap load! Mac & Cheese and Ramen are like my best friends when it comes to food. they are cheap and easy. i want more but money is too tight.

Day 21 Tuesday

it rained like crazy this morning! luckily we went out to teach like right as it stopped. but then we had an appointment blow out later in the day. we called a guy named junior to see if we could come by and he said yes. he said he lived right up the street in a yellow house. so we started going there but never found the house. everyone was saying to just keep going cause he lived at the top in a pink and white house. we thought that it was weird but went with it. well we found the pink and white house. but it was the wrong junior. ya the guy who lived there was really named junior! we talked to him for a bit and he seemed way chill! we set up an appointment for him and like 3 others on thursday!

Day 22 Wednesday

we had district meeting today. i was hoping to see some of my MTC friends there. the only one that is in the same district as me is Sister Wilkinson. We talked for a bit about our time so far in Jamaica and how awesome it is! i never saw this until she told me but i have a tan! somehow i did not burn that bad and i have a sick tan! never thought that i would see the day of that! we found that one of our investigators has a sin that is gonna have to have president brown do the interview. he will probably come out next thursday to do it and just go teaching with us then too. thats really sick but kinda scary too! im starting to get homesick but its not as homesick as i thought that i would be. Biking is getting easier but it still hurts since i havent been on a bike in like 5 years. hopefully it starts to "cool" off here soon.

Day 23 Thursday

Personal space is one thing that does not exist here. especially with driving. whenever we are on our bikes, people pass by us going 100kmh (60mph) and they are just like 6 inches away! its the scariest thing! Something was up with my knee today when i woke up tho. something with the bone was hurting. i think that i just smacked it against the wall some time during the night. by night time it was ok. to be honest i wake up every morning thinking to myself that i wanna go home, but once i get out and teach a lesson then i just wanna stay! missions do weird things to you but its so worth it!

Day 24 Friday

with all of the american music that is played here i am starting to realize that there is gonna be a lot of songs that im gonna miss. my companion has no idea what most songs are that i listen to cause they all came out within the last year! anyone wanna keep track of all the songs that come out? haha. my teaching skills are getting better each day! im talking more and more with each lesson. the bad thing is that my bed is infested with bed bugs. yes they are real. the first night that i was here i woke up with like 20 bites. i sprayed my bed and so far its worked pretty well. i will have to check again in a week tho. another good thing, soda is like $70 here! thats like 70 cents in the US! sometimes ill stop at one of the corner shops and get a bottle. it feels so good to have them. ive even seen some for like $50. they dont have mt. dew tho so that really sucks :(

Day 25 Saturday

looking back it feels like ive been here for a day, and looking forward it seems like forever! time is something that really gets screwed up when on a mission! days are weeks and weeks are days! the only thing im hating now is that i cant remember where some stories are in the scriptures. we had an investigator not keep a commitment so i shared the sotry of the man who went to the prophet and was told to wash in the river jordan 7 times. i had no idea where to find that so i had to say it from memory! we are encouraged to have them read the scriptures so that really sucked for me. Lots of people ask us for money when we are riding around too. Port Antonio may seem rich but it is still poor. its kinda funny to see peoples reactions when we tell them that we dont get paid for this and they make so much more than we do every month. some people treat us like trash too. white men in nice clothes is too much like FBI or CIA to them haha

Day 26 Sunday

well the members didnt get in a fight this week. we showed up an hour early for church for an appointment and the guy didnt show up! we were ticked on that cause he is supposed to be one of our super elect people. but after we moved on from that we saw that our 9 year old investigator showed up! and he showed up by himself! this is big for us cause his entire family is less active and his dad is basically an alcoholic. this kid is one of our best investigators and is so sick! hes way shy but gets excited when he knows he understands! our 10 year old one didnt show up tho. we are trying to rebuke his family as lovingly as we can. they are all less active too. we dont blame the kid as much cause he is 10. we are trying to get the parents in both families to understand that it is mostly their responsibility that they have their kids to church and that they come with them. hopefully that works out well.

Last part of MTC and arriving in Jamaica!!

hey everyone! just so you know i got to Jamaica with no troubles at all! its way humid like everyone said so i sweat like crazy! thank heavens we have a few fans in the rooms of the apartment so its not too bad! so here is the day by day thing:

Rest of Day 10

we got stuck at the temple! we all thought that there was gonna be a bus coming to get us but they had stopped that before we had all gotten out of the endowment room! we were waiting for like an hour before we decided to walk! then we got to the field below the temple and they said that we couldnt walk! how stupid is that?! they called security tho. but then they took like another hour to get up there! we missed dinner so they said that they had some for us back down at west campus. but the 2 vans they brought couldnt even fit us all! so we had all the sisters get in a van and some of the elders in the other. but there were still 6 or 8 of us left so we stayed. it took like another 45min for them to come back for us! it was ridiculous! MTC really isnt as coordinated as i had hoped or thought. then the food they gave us sucked too! most of the missionaries got sick from it! i swear they fed us straight salmonella! but we ended the day good by giving the sisters in our district blessings.

Day 11 Saturday

the days really are getting way fast! we have i think somewhere around like 20lbs of food to eat in 2 days! Elder Phippen really has people that love him cause he keeps getting all this crap! our last gym time was tonight so that really sucked. and to make it worse, they called off the last part of it cause of rain! but what really sucked is after it was called off we went to the playground right there and wanted to goof off for a few more minutes. gym time really wasnt over yet so we didnt think anything of it. the girl in charge then came over and nicely asked if we would just go back to the dorms. we said yes it would be like 5 more seconds max. no joke like 3 seconds after that some guy came over and said to us, "you guys have 3 seconds before i get all your names and go tell your branch president!". like we woulda given him our names anyway! but other than that the day was pretty slow. the scheduling is still messed up so we dont even look at the schedule now.

Day 12 Sunday

Last Sunday in the MTC! the day was slow until the devotional at 7pm. we had Steve Allen, the managing director of the missionary department, come down and speak. he joked around for like the first 30min of his talk but it was way good! after the devotional we went and watched the John Tanner story and Only a Stonecutter. those stories are really amazing! i always feel the spirit when i watch them!

Day 13 Monday

Last day in the MTC!!!!! we kinda sneaked into gym to get rid of stress and it really helped! food really sucked today tho. not often but it happened a few times. Elder Holland stopped by the West Campus!!!!! i think that Elder Oaks was there too! i never saw them cause we were back at our dorms but the rest of my zone saw them! heck they even shook his hand! that made me kinda mad but Holland is in charge of the Carribean missions so i might get to still see him! We still got a butt load of food! we are just gonna give the stuff we dont eat and cant take tomorrow to the new elders. Im not going to sleep cause my history with short sleep is not good. ill just stay up and wake my roommates up.

Day 14 Tuesday

so i made it though the night but not the plane rides. we left at 2am and man was it long to the airport. i did see mom tho while driving so that was really funny and cool! it was way nice to see you guys at the airport too!! that really helped me a lot!!! the flight to dallas i dont know what happened cause i was sleeping the whole time. the flight to miami was better. i only sleeped the first hour of the flight. the everglades were pretty cool to see! the lay over in Miami was way cool too! there was a lot of stuff there! we also met a Jamaican lady named Norene. she said that she lives 4 miles east of Port Antonio so whoever is there might get to teach her!! i couldnt fall asleep on the flight to Kingston cause i had the middle seat and i found out that i twitch when i sleep and i didnt want that to be a big thing. we got there and President Brown greeted us with the APs. Teancum was there so that was cool! the other AP is the decendent of the first native to have the gospel!

Day 15 Wednesday

so i found out my area today. PORT ANTONIO! that was a pretty big surprise but i love it! after the transfer meeting we came straight here. my trainer is elder dalley from riverton utah! Port antonio is the NE side of the island so we had a ways to drive. we went from spanish town to ocho rios to porty. its like driving from home to st. george. KFC kinda rules the place, haha not a shocker if you know what i mean lol. there are a lot of american food places here so it still feels a little bit like home.

Day 16 Thursday

it was my first day teaching today! there are so many prepared people here! one investigator came up to elder dalley a while ago and just wanted to learn! she is being baptized on Sept 14. she reads everything that we give her and wants more everytime! the bad part is that the dogs are way loud. i havent had a problem with violent dogs yet but they are really loud. they just roam the streets. them and goats. its really wierd. but another weird thing is that the sun is up at like 5 30 and down by 6 30. we still come in at 9 tho.

Day 17 Friday

The land and people here are awesome! everyone is open to talking ab out god cause they are all christian. i found out that Patois is not supposed to be spoken by missionaries. just understood. we had a lesson with one investigator who i swear is just a black joseph smith. he has the same questions and concerns that he did! he has a ton of potential! my butt hurts from the bike and i still sweat like crazy but its worth it!

Day 18 saturday

there is a ton of american music played here! ive heard selena gomez, justin bieber, justin timberlake, and jason duerlo. it makes me homesick but at the same time it helps too. we had a few first lessons today and they went pretty good. we went to one guy who knows that everything with the church is true but he wont come cause his family is not interested and he doenst want to tear them apart. my bike broke too so that sucked. its just a flat so not too bad. there is a repair shop by the church so we got it fixed

Day 19 Sunday

i found that my tire was still flat. we pumped it up and rode to church way fast. the branch isnt that big but the hearts they have are! they really come for the right reasons! the last part was really weird tho. the elders in elders quorm got in a fight on what a testimony was. i just tried to stay out of the whole thing. you couldnt feel the spirit at all. i guess that thats the first time its happened in a while tho. there was one guy who came who wants to join but has never been taught. when we invited him for the 21st as his baptism day, he said that he wanted to be baptized now. this guy is really elect and i cant wait to teach him!

Thats all i really have time for but email me any questions you have!
Talk to you guys Next week!
Love you all!
Elder Meacham
